Privacy Policy

Etymon.ai helps you explore the origins of words. This page explains what data we keep, why we keep it, and how to control it.

Data we collect

We keep only what the product needs to work for you. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with advertisers.

Account
Name, email, and profile picture from Google when you sign in.
Word collection
Every word you look up, with the origin language and a short meaning snippet, stored against your account.
Usage stats
Total lookup count, day streak, and last-active date — used to show your progress.
Subscription
Plan, status, and Stripe customer ID if you upgrade. We never see your full card number.
Technical
Standard server logs (IP, browser, timestamps) for abuse prevention and debugging.

How we use it

  • •To provide the core experience — etymology lookups, your personal word collection at /words, streak tracking, and per-word lookup history.
  • •To authenticate you via Google and keep your session secure.
  • •To process subscription payments and honor plan-specific features (via Stripe).
  • •To improve the product, in aggregate — e.g. understanding which features get used. We do not profile individual users.

Third parties we use

Running Etymon means relying on a small number of trusted providers. None of them receive more than what they need to do their job.

Google (OAuth)
Sign-in only — we receive your name, email, and avatar.
Supabase
Our primary database. Stores your account, word collection, and usage stats.
Stripe
Handles all payment data if you subscribe. Etymon never stores card details.
AI providers
Words you look up are sent to Google Gemini to generate etymologies. The word itself is sent; your name and email are not.
Plausible
Privacy-friendly, cookie-free page analytics. No personal identifiers.

Storage and security

Your data lives in a hosted Postgres database (Supabase) with row-level security — meaning your collection is only readable by you. Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest.

A small amount of data (recent search history, UI preferences) is also cached in your browser's localStorage for speed. Clearing your browser data removes that local cache without affecting your server-side collection.

Your rights and controls

You can exercise any of the following rights — most are one click inside the app.

  • •See your data. Your collection is visible at /words.
  • •Delete individual words. Hover any word card and click the trash icon, or use the “Remove from collection” button in the detail drawer.
  • •Manage your subscription. Open the profile dropdown → Manage Subscription to update billing or cancel at any time.
  • •Delete your account. Email us at privacy@etymon.ai and we'll permanently remove your account and collection within 30 days.
  • •Object or restrict. You can ask us to stop or restrict a specific use of your data by emailing the same address.

Cookies

We use cookies only for what's strictly necessary: keeping you signed in and remembering your theme and script preferences. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

Changes to this policy

If we make meaningful changes to how we handle your data, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, notify signed-in users by email.
