About

There is a story inside every word.

Etymon helps you follow it. Type a word and see the roots, older spellings, language changes, and related words that shaped it.

What you can do here

Each lookup pairs a plain explanation with a visual map. You can open the timeline, inspect roots and cognates, compare two words, or wander through a whole word family. If you sign in, Etymon also keeps your collection and turns words you have found into short quizzes.

A note about the answers

Etymon uses a mix of AI systems and saves earlier results so repeat lookups load quickly. That makes it possible to explore an unusual word on the spot. It also means an answer can be wrong, especially when a word has a disputed history. Use Etymon to learn and explore. For research or publication, check the important parts against a historical dictionary or linguistic source.

Who made it

I'm Rumi Elias Calles. I built Etymon because most etymology entries give you the answer but hide the path. I wanted something you could follow with your eyes and keep exploring. Etymon is an independent project, and the code is public. If you spot a broken connection or have an idea, I'd like to hear it.
